Starting of the hike
At Cabo Espichel, you can see some of Portugal's most impressive dinosaur footprints, preserved on ancient limestone cliffs. These tracks are about 129 million years old, from the Early Cretaceous, and were made by both carnivorous theropods and large herbivorous dinosaurs. The tilted rock layers reveal how tectonic movements lifted the seabed over millions of years. Long before science explained them, locals believed these marks were the steps of a giant mule that inspired the nearby sanctuary.
The Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora do Cabo Espichel stands dramatically on the cliffs overlooking the Atlantic. Built between the 17th and 18th centuries, it includes the church, pilgrim lodgings, and the iconic sweeping courtyard. For centuries, this remote site attracted pilgrims inspired by a local legend of a divine apparition on the cliffs. Today it remains a striking blend of faith, history, and wild ocean scenery, offering one of the most powerful landscapes in Portugal.
